Go East Young Man!

February's National Geographic had a fascinating chart showing where single men and women are concentrated in the United States. And--surprise, surprise--single men dominate in the West and single women in the East.

Now why would that be? Well I have a theory. The median center of US population (as of 2000) is skewed toward the East and slightly to the North. So all things being equal, if single women were less mobile once they reached adulthood than their male counterparts, then their concentration would also skew East and North. Thus, to me is seems fairly obvious: Women tend to remain near their support networks, family, friends, employers, educational institutions. Men move for opportunity...West and South, explaining their presence on the West Coast and in southern technology centers.

Is it a sexist observation? Maybe, but I don't know how else to explain the graph.

Holy crap! My long-distance boyfriend wants me to move to California, because that's where his business is. My family wants me to move to New York because that's where they live. Spooky.
I've noticed that in Michigan, the largest concentration of single on the west coast, happens to be in Saugatuck, a large gay community. I'm just saying!
or, maybe those big blue dots are near large military bases? or, perhaps the east coast women are more picky about mates & simply waiting longer to get married? I like your theory about women staying nearer their suppport groups. It's not sexist to notice a gender phenomenon, but I don't think it accounts for the whole story. oooh, Lew has a point! ~~ D.K.
Damn-not to many single ladies in southcentral Texas
What ARE you on? If we were truly a democracy, we would have high speed trains across the country with club cars! Mix it up!
I think the Beach Boys were aware of this fact years ago:

Well East coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the Southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when I'm down there

The Mid-West farmer's daughters really make you feel alright
And the Northern girls with the way they kiss
They keep their boyfriends warm at night

I wish they all could be California
I wish they all could be California
I wish they all could be California girls

The West coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a french bikini on Hawaii island
Dolls by a palm tree in the sand

I been all around this great big world

And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world

I wish they all could be California Girls

Notice how they love those Northern, Southern, and Midwestern Girls but damn they sure wish they could be California Girls.

Why? Because they grew up in So Cal and we're obviously lacking single girls!
Lizzy... And you're in Minneapolis because of all the good luetifisk, right? ;-)

Lew... Here in Sodom by the Sea, I'm sure that the gay community influences the stats somewhat, but NYC has a large and vibrant gay community as well.

D.K... Would the Army constitute "opportunity"?
Robert... You're in good shape if your down near Brownsville, but I'm guessing you're not. :-)

Peacechick... How about bars on airplanes. I hear the new A380 has quite a setup.

PoliShifter... Now we know what they were talking about! It all becomes clear!
New York City is home to millions of single people. The percentage of unmarried adults in this city is staggering.

Though the percentage may be high, it's not high because the population is gay. The gay side is substantial. But the press it receives is far in excess of its numbers.

My mother came to New York City as a single woman after growing up in Iowa and graduating from college in Illinois. After living in NYC for six years, she got married. Four years later the happy couple left NY City for the NY suburbs.
Also: the software industry: still male-dominated. Big blue dots around Silicon Valley and Redmond, there.

Just saying.
Tom...and Austin, Houston, Dallas, L.A., Phoenix--all high-tech corridors. Like I said, men move for opportunity.

no_slappz... And notice how much higher they disconnect is the NYC/New Jersey area has more than 3 times the number of single women as the L.A. area (highest for single men). Does it have 3 times the population? Not so sure, but I don't think so.
That's very interesting. Someone once said, "Go west, young man," and they all went?
It would only be sexist if Don Imus said it.
Nvisiblewmn... Indeed they did!

Diva... Well, maybe not sexist, but very, very offensive! :-)
Austin...
Hmmm.
Warm weather...
Kickass blues...
Laid-back atmosphere...
More single men than women...

Why do I live near Chicago again?
No wonder the marriage rates continue to fall. If people all moved into the central states and intermingled, we might see an explosion of marriages.

Lew, I never knew that fact about Saugatuck. Doesn't DeVos have a castle there?
Sewmouse... Austin is a great town I agree, but read my response to Kathy...

If people all moved into the central states and intermingled, we might see an explosion of marriages.

Kathy... Indeed! "And where did this frog move to meet an intelligent, beautiful, and available frogette," you might ask? Why, Minnesota, of course.

So you see Sewmouse, maybe Chicage isn't so bad after all.
kvatch, you wrote:

Your statement is unclear. But NY City is home to lots of divorced people as well as never-married people. More adults are single than married in this town. Moreover, women outnumber men.

You asked:

"Does it have 3 times the population? Not so sure, but I don't think so."

NY City population is 8 million and heading higher. Add another million for those in commuting distance in CT, NY and NY suburbs. Meanwhile, the suburbs are havens of marital bliss compared with NYC.
I guess that explains why there are so many more male ex-pats than female ex-pats in Prague. That and cheap beer and endless smoking hot bohemian chicks.
Your statement is unclear.

Not at all, no_slappz. The graphic marks the population centers with the highest numbers of single men and single women-L.A. area for men with 45,000 more, NYC/NJ area for women with 185,000 more.

I only noted that the NYC area likely had a much higher per capita rate (NYC at 8M population + surrounding area) (Los Angeles area at 12M population).

Praguetwin... So are you saying that you're over there because of the excellent single male to single female ratio? ;-)
Hmm. So I'm geographically in the right area, but like Molly Ringwald said in Sixteen Candles:

Donger's here for five hours, and he's got somebody. I live here my whole life, and I'm like a disease.

WTF.
