Diebold Needs To Be Outlawed. Here's Why...

...and now back to our regularly scheduled blogging.

The controversy surrounding Diebold voting machines escalates as serious new security flaws are discovered that the company seems loathe to fix. And why? Because Diebold officials don't believe that anyone would try to exploit these vulnerabilities. From the N.Y. Times -
The company's letter went on: "The probability for exploiting this vulnerability to install unauthorized software that could affect an election is considered low."

David Bear, a spokesman for Diebold Election Systems, said the potential risk existed because the company's technicians had intentionally built the machines in such a way that election officials would be able to update their systems in years ahead.

"For there to be a problem here, you're basically assuming a premise where you have some evil and nefarious election officials who would sneak in and introduce a piece of software," he said. "I don't believe these evil elections people exist.

My opinion? Diebold should be banned from the market because they make faulty economic arguments to support a position that leaves their machines open to mass election fraud. In short, they just don't f*cking get it.

There is this marvellous invention called paper and pencil. Well, I suppose two inventions really.
Some place combine them to create a written ballot paper.
It is very effective, and the ballot papers serve as a receipt for each vote cast.
I know it sounds backward in this tech age, but it works.
Sounds like Diebold is in dienial! They probably didn't think anything of promising to deliver Bush the vote in Ohio either.
If diebold won't fix these security flaws, maybe we should have Microsoft fix them.

Can you see it - some hacker would have us electing Saddam Hussein president.
Which came first? I guess the pencil, then people got tired of writing on rocks, and they are so heavy anyway.

It seems like any decent hacker with some kind of inside connection could corrupt the system just to make a point.

Hey when the probability reaches zero, then call me, at which point I'm still going to side with Cartledge and insist on a paper receipt of my vote.

Thanks but no thanks, Diebold.

What a horrific idea. Probably elect Steve Ballmer. Auuugggghhh!

Praguetwin...they could but the doorprize for that is now 25 years in the Federal pen thanks to the Patriot Act.
I can't believe the Diebold is making these arguments - "For there to be a problem here, you're basically assuming a premise where you have some evil and nefarious election officials who would sneak in and introduce a piece of software," he said. "I don't believe these evil elections people exist.

This just boggles my mind.
The fact that they acknowledge the opening and refuse to deal with it says so much about this whole electronic voting debacle. The system is setup to be hacked and they could give a rat's ass...and our leaders dont blink an eye.

Rove and the boyz are just itching to get their hands on these machines..ah the dirty tricks they can play..nationwide even!
Hell! Why all the fuss? So there are vulnerabilities in the damn matrix! It's just the bedrock of democracy, don't get your knickers in a wad over it!
It's just the bedrock of democracy I'm inclined to ask - please explain.
Surely bedrock democracy demands a free, fair, transparant and accountable vote.
The Microsoft option was amusing, but I can assure you that MS service agents wouldn't touch this with a stick.
If I had the skills I'd throw a large portion of the vote in a particular election to Richard Pryor (Brewsters Millions) just to prove a point about the system being kerplouie.
So there are vulnerabilities in the damn matrix!

TPM, just riffing on what you said...

Election Official One -
"Did you hear that, the Diebold machine beeped."

Election Official Two -
"It's a glitch in the Matrix. I happens when they change something."
Surely bedrock democracy demands a free, fair, transparant and accountable vote.

It certainly does. That's what last session's HR 550 (Accountability in Elections) was all about, but the Congressperson Ney (soon to be departed) held that one up in committee just about forever.
I would like to invite Mr. Bear to visit Florida, where I can personally show him an "evil and nefarious election official" who not only exists, but managed to pull off the ultimate election heist six years ago. She is now running for the Senate, and he can visit her website at www.electharris.org if he cares to verify that she exists.

You said it, Froggy -- they just don't f*cking get it. That is the most clueless, head-up-the-arse statement I've heard all day, and that's saying something as I'm watching the Sunday talking heads.
I want to vote from my phone and they have the means to do this. People could vote from abroad, hospitals, nursing homes, etc. with a PIN number and transportation or five hours on line with kids would not make people hesitate.

The whole system is just screwed up. Diebold sucks. This corruption without challenge sucks.
I think they get it, but it's not in their best interests to put out the truth. Their profit is made by benefitting those already in power.
What Blake said. They get it, alright, they just hope we don't get it.
Blake, qubit, you may be right, but either way Diebold is dangerous to democracy and needs to be dealt with. Maybe anti-trust...
With Diebold machines being controlled by Republican crooks, it wouldn't surprise me if we start seeing some presidential elections here in the US with huge landslide margins like we see in favor of GOP candidates in red states like Idaho, Utah and Wyoming, where the Republicans tend to win by margins like 70% to 25%... but at the national level. It could get to the point where they could run someone like Gary North and still "win". Diebold sucks, and we need to be demanding paper ballots!
fuckyouhomoyousickfuckingasshole.

Ah another erudite comment from the nutsphere.
