Are 1 in 30 Americans really terrorist suspects?

As reported in USA Today yesterday (and now pretty much all over the news): It isn't just AT&T that has a "fat pipe" straight to NSA, it's also Bell South and Verizon. We also know that it's not 10's of thousands of Americans that NSA, and by extension the administration, is interested in. It's 10's of millions!

I don't have much to add to such astounding, catastrophic news, but let me make one single point. If conservatively we say that phone records for only...say...10,000,000 Americans are involved in this massive breach of the 4th amendment, then Bu$hCo will have to defend surveillance of 1 in every 30 Americans. In other words, Bu$hCo's only defense will be to claim that it considers 1 of every 30 Americans to be a terrorist suspect! Think about that...

Hey, good point,

but keep in mind, that most of the numbers being thrown around are customers, not people, and that each one of those customers could represent a head of household.

So, in reality, when looking at residential examples, we're looking at whole families of Al Qaeda terra-ists.

It's not too clear how it breaks out as to businesses and residential, but I don't think that matters anymore.

Political BOOM.

Mike
I agree, after all these figures are from conservatives - they must be conservative figures.
Canada is having high level talks as I write, to consider closing the border to stop the flow of terrorists coming north.
One would hope this is the straw that would break the back of the Badministration; but I am not that optimistic.

There has been plenty of reason for this empire to fall before this revelation.

Americans and their leaders are just to dense to stand up and do what they were born to do...Defend America against those that would harm her.

Where are all those gun-nuts when you need them?!

Um...Hello...This kind of breach by a President who is willfully and actively destroying the Constitution is exactly the reason for your right to bear arms...So get to bearing already!

Alas, I think our Democracy is doomed if something doesn't happen soon...And FYI...The November Election Cycle is too late!
I bet Bush really believes 1 in 30 Americans are a threat to National Security.

Actually it's more like Bush only trusts 3 out of 10 Americans.

30% are for Bush, the rest of us are commie pinko liberal whacko Al Qaeda terrists who belong at Gitmo.
Gary has some good points. If this doesn't motivate Americans to stand up and do something, then Democracy is doomed.

Side note: Only 1 in 30? I don't have to worry. I could buy 99 of 100 raffle tickets and still come out a loser.

Can you imagine if this was Clinton's administration doing this? Post-9/11 or not, the gun nuts and black helicopter freaks would be screaming about Clinton turning over all our phone calls to the UN or UNICEF or Amnesty International or whatever group they were terrified of.

But because it's George W. Bush, political hacks like Jon Kyl and Jon Cornyn are saying domestic surveillance of tens of millions of Americans is a good thing AND it's constitutional.

Conversely, maybe we should have completely open borders with Mexico so that, by simple osmosis, some of our terrorists seep out of the country.

Also, we should definitely reduce class sizes. If you have a classroom with 30 kids, one of them is going to be a terrorist. Reduce it to 29, and you get rid of the terrorist.

Denisdekat, well then...get those other 20 of 30 into the program. Damnit we need to be watching all of those t'rrorists.

Kathy, I'm sure things are skewed toward bloggers. Do don't worry...be happy.
Don't look at me. I'm trying to blend in with the other 29 people.
I've read conservative sites that claim 8 to 10% of the country is a Fifth Column. They believe there are 25 to 30 million traitors in our midst.
Durn tootin the President would think I'm a threat if anything I write about politics ever burst his bubble. And I'll wager that there are well over 30 million people who feel like I do. Over 50 million voted for Kerry two years ago. I'll bet if that same election were held today he'd have well over 60 million.

Knighterrant...welcome...but wouldn't that just comprise the journalists? I often feel that hey make up 8 to 10% by themselves.

Bhfrik, I know just how you feel. In fact, I'm gonna feel really left out if Bush isn't listening on my calls.

PT, with a photo like that you can never blend. You look like Che Guevara's...uh...brother?
Et tu, Verizon? Crikey.
Now instead of playing 'count the mullets' at the grocery store, I can play spot the terrorists!
Let me go on the record now and say it is not me... With that let me add that such a daunting task will require many more appointments by qualified individuals in the Bus regime and we all know how good he is at placing qualified candidates in pertinent positions in his admin. So I am confident that he will get the job done...
we are another 9/11 away from fascism
Grae, I think yer right. Sigh...

Tom H, I'm an intinerant speech therapist working in public schools. My caseload of kids is at about 60, so that must mean a couple of my students are either terrorists or they have terrorist ties. Of the 60 staff members at the local high school, there must be a couple of them plotting ways to blow up a number of things. Gee, maybe we will even get to the point the Soviets were at when kids were ratting on their parents and getting them sent off to gulags.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHH
We'll just have to wait and see what the future holds for us. I hope it's sans Gulag.
Can you imagine being an American guy with swarthy features travelling on an airplane? Can you imagine if you are a Lebanese-American or a Moroccan-American who calls relatives back in the old country? How about Americans of Indonesian or Phillipino descent? Suspicion covers a huge number of Americans because this country's leadership is inculcating fear and division. I think it is more than 1 in 30.

By the way, congrats on 500 posts...I am only a few away from that number myself! What did we do before this?
Snave, Graeme, I just wowed by the statistic itself. 1 in 30. I can't grok it, but even if it was 1 in 50 or 1 in 100, I'd still call it ridiculous to apply numbers like that to terrorism. Thus I don't see this as anything but a cover for a nixonian "dirty trick" campaign on a massive scale.

Stephen, after 9/11 and the passage of the Patriot Act I can't imagine what it must be like to be an [anything]-American, and that includes "scientist"-American, "writer"-American, and "journalist"-American.
What really bothers me is that 3 of the 4 phone companies wilingly threw their customers "under the bus" by handing the info over. At least Qwest told them to fuck off..and I thought they sucked as a phone company when I had them in AZ..I retract that thought now.
As usual I'm late coming to the party. the gun nuts and black helicopter freaks would be screaming

My alternate personality, Miss Conspiracy-Theorists, takes umbrage with that statement, simply because she was right about the king all along. She would like to say this doesn't surprise her at all. And she fully expects much more to come out about this very soon.

As fas as the 1 in 30...Well, I knew there was something fishy about my family! It's off to Gitmo for the lot of 'em.(It's certainly not me that got us put on "the list", is it?)
Please ignore the typo...seems Verizon is out to get my keyboard this evening.
I guess this means we're a nation of terrorists. Looks like we're going to have to fight 'em over here after all.
I really appreciate that Qwest and Working ASsets refused to give over the records. Pretty impressive.
I would like to add the fact that Qwest is the only telecom who refused to give up their data. Kudos to Qwest
