He Said What? - Surveillance Taken To A Whole New Level

Lest you think that illegal Federal wiretapping is the only kind of surveillance brewing in the kooky mind of "The Man"--Houston's Chief of Police has a surprise. He's suggested that the solution to understaffed police forces it to place cameras in apartment complexes, downtown streets, shopping malls, and even private homes. In fact, he wants it written into the building codes!

I wish I could make this sh*t up, but reality is way more bizarre then even my frog brain can come up with. So now, as a homework assignment, everyone needs to go out and get a copy of Oath of Fealty by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, a great SciFi novel from the late seventies that covers this exact scenario in detail.

I live here and I hadn't seen that.

I was at a three year old's b-day party. Was doing some surveiling of my own. Found out some interesting stuff about home security. Here's a good tip: Never leave the lights on when your having sex with your spouse - it's easier to see in the windows.
Here in LA not suprisingly, there are camera's everywhere.

The only problem with them is...

they record bad things happening.. they do nothing to protect people.

I prefer the love of a large dog and the greater love of a Louisville Slugger.
so when are glass houses going to be required?

Do you believe he actually said, with a straight face, "If you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?" At one time, that used to be a gag line.
Cameras are like cops, they don't stop crime, they just help in the aftermath. Not that I don't like cops, I just feel better when they're not around.
Crackpot, I prefer the love of lots of locks and decorative gates made of iron.

Abi, that statement would almost make sense if the definition of "wrong" weren't so goddamned fluid.

Left, someone once said to me that the primary purpose was not to protect the public since, practically speaking, that's impossible. Here in Babylong by the Bay the major function of the cops seems to be protecting businesses from people exercising their right of free speech.
Scheise... stuff like this is what the Bush administration's wet dreams are made of...
And the loony left says Bush is moving this coutry towards an Orwellian police state!
Gotta love the chiefs logic. If you're not doing anything wrong what do you have to worry about? I for one am pretty freaking worried about my constitutional rights. In fact I believe I am doing the right thing by being worried, and only wish that people like the chief and the neo cons would stop worrying about how to make the constitution a quaint memory.
Jesus Christ! You mean they are running the government based on a 70's novel now?

I hope Larry and Jerry get credit at least.
someone offered a grand to anyone who can present evidence of the chief commiting ANY crime on video so that they can send it to the local police and demand that charges be filed.

I love crap like that.
