Insult to Injury - Eminent Domain Shenanigans in New Orleans

The Bring Back New Orleans commission has issued a controversial plan to put a four month moratorium on issuing rebuilding permits. Justifiable outraged N.O. residents are accusing the commission of stalling to allow for a "land grab" by developers. Other controversial items in the plan include a discussion of reducing N.O.'s footprint to deal with a smaller projected population and wording that supports the use of eminent domain to deal with neighborhoods that show few signs revitalization.

Interestingly, conservative commentators, who have railed against the eminent domain decision in Kelo vs. New London are noticeably silent when it comes to New Orleans. Just yesterday, Michelle Malkin blogged on the eminent domain controversy surrounding Ohio retirees Joy and Carl Gable, and The Castle Coalition lists many such cases...but nothing about New Orleans.

Apparently when the victims are investors (Kelo) and middle-class whites in Ohio (Gable) or Connecticut (Kelo), it's worthy of the right's attention. But Katrina victims, who aren't even living in their threatened homes, don't rate a mention.

I was listening to a story about this on NPR this morning. I'm glad Conservatives like to stand up for their principals only when its conveniant.
they are noticably silent becuase they don't care about black people - there is lots of practice in the Anglo world persocuting non-whites. Just look at Abramoff et al. And the poor folks of St. Bernard Parish. Screwed once by Nature and many times over by their own government. Presidential malpractice...can't we sue for that?
Why are we not surprised? Hypocrites.
I'm no surprised either. Watch for Alito to write the opinion upholding the land grabs.
Hey, this is the opportunity the wingnuts have been waiting for- to make New Orleans lily-white!

And where is that oh-so-liberal media to report on this outrage? I guess they are too busy licking Bush's boots to actually be bothered with NEWS.

Yup. It's pretty much all the validation I need in the morning. :-)

Stacy: I wish this where the end of the story. I've seen at least two other stories in the last couple of days indicating that Katrina victums are still having it mighty hard. May blog about those in a day or two.
You people are missing the whole point. Now that NO is abandoned, let the oil drilling commence!

We're already drilling in the Gulf. If we drill in the French Quarter all we're going to get is mohitos.
I lived in New Orleans before I got married 6 yrs ago, and when NOLA becomes the White Wonderland that the Halliburton contractors envision it to be, one has to wonder what will happen to all of the Hispanic slave laborers who did the rebuilding? I doubt there will be much room in the White Wonderland for a lil bit of tan.
The new plan to rebuild the area is no where near fair and equitable. I quote from a NY Times article: "The plan, which depends on nearly $17 billion more from the federal government, gives neighborhoods in low-lying parts of the city from four months to a year to attract sufficient numbers of residents or be bulldozed."

Once bulldozed..its a land grab for the developers.
I don't think the city government of New Orleans is handling the situation correctly - in a manner of impropriety. But that's just my opinion.

The Farce Report
This is disgusting. I just saw a report on this on PBS last night. Basically, they want NOLA to become some huge, white, tourist-trappy six flags or disneyland or some shit.

Yep. The privileged white man will make damn sure that the poor have no place in the new, improved New Orleans. How fucked up.
...gives neighborhoods in low-lying parts of the city from four months to a year to attract sufficient numbers of residents or be bulldozed.

And herein is exactly the issue, with the moritorium in place the residents can't begin to repopulate their neighborhoods, thereby preventing them from short-circuiting the commissions attempt to displace them permanently.

Disgusting, really!
